‘Financial turmoil in Birmingham’

The Financial Times leads on news that Birmingham City Council has declared itself effectively bankrupt. The broadsheet claims equal pay deals at the local authority are responsible for “draining” its resources. The “largest local authority in Europe” is in “financial turmoil”, The i Paper added.

Metro says that water companies are “blatantly breaking the law” by dumping untreated waste in sunny weather. The firms are permitted to deliberately release sewage only after heavy rain, but a number of spills are believed to have taken place on some of the hottest and driest days of the year, the paper reports.

The Daily Express leads on comments from the minister for immigration, Robert Jenrick, who is quoted as saying France must do “more” to stop Channel migrants before they reach UK waters. He calls for the UK to copy “decisive” measures taken by Belgium.
